Prepare to embark on a Steamship Adventure, taking you back more then a 100 years ago when steam-power powered a rising country full of carefree excitement and adventure!
The Chautauqua Belle was built in Mayville New York in 1975, and comminissioned in 1976 as part of our area's celebration of our nation's bi-centennial. The S.S. Chautauqua Belle is 98 feet long, 18 and 1/2 feet wide, and weighs over 68 tons fully loaded. It is one of only six 100% high-pressure steam powered public vessels operating in all of North America!
Her 100 horsepower boiler creates steam pressure in excess of 200 pounds, which drives a vertical skinner steam engine that drives our generator giving us electric power. The steam also powers two horizontal steam pistons on either side, which turn the paddle wheel at about 18 revolutions per minute, give us a full forward speed of 9 miles per hour.
